Nutrition & The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP)

North Star Child Care Center proudly participates in the Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). This program’s goals are to improve the diets of children and establish healthy lifetime food habits through appropriate nutrition education.

We adhere to all CACFP guidelines for menu planning, food preparation, service, and storage, ensuring children receive nutritious and developmentally appropriate meals every day. Meals and snacks included.

The center provides all meals and snacks for enrolled children, following a consistent daily schedule:

  • Breakfast: A “cold” breakfast is served until approximately 7:30 a.m.
  • Morning Snack: Provided at approximately 9:00 a.m.
  • Lunch: Served between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
  • Afternoon Snack: Provided at approximately 3:00 p.m.
  • Dinner: For children in care after 6:00 p.m., dinner is provided at approximately 6:00 p.m.
  • Menus: Menus are posted in each program room.

Policy On Outside Food

To maintain CACFP compliance and ensure the safety of all children, food is not allowed to be brought from home to supplement mealtimes, with the following exceptions:

  • Infant Foods: Parents must provide breast milk, formula, baby food, and cereal for infants.
  • Doctor’s Instructions: Food may be brought from home only if instructed by a doctor, with written documentation maintained in your child’s file. Any parent-provided food would be supplemented to meet CACFP guidelines.

Food Allergies & Special Needs

  • Documentation Required: If your child has food allergies or special feeding needs, you must provide a doctor’s note detailing the allergy or need. This documentation is required to be on file.
  • Allergy Action Plan: Children with special dietary needs require both an Allergy Action Plan and a Diet Modification Plan completed by their physician.
  • Center Policy: North Star is a Peanut Free Center. No products containing peanuts, peanut oil, or other peanut by-products are allowed within the center.
  • Dietary Modifications: We will modify or supplement diets on a case-by-case basis in consultation with parents and the child’s health care provider to meet documented medical needs.

Families are asked to complete the CACFP Food Enrollment and Eligibility Forms via Brightwheel during the enrollment process. If you have any questions regarding our nutrition program or CACFP, please contact the Center Director.
